What adds spice to life?  One way to approach this question is to look at all the areas that make a whole person, for example Social, Physical, Intellectual, Creative, Emotional, Spiritual, and Financial well-being. These are the seven dimensions of wellness that can help us achieve a holistic and satisfying life in retirement. Let’s take a look at each one and how we can achieve them.

  1. Social well-being:

Do you have people you talk to outside of work? Our ability to connect with others and maintain meaningful relationships is critical to our overall well-being. Socializing has been discovered to boost our mood, reduce stress, and prevent isolation. Some ways to enhance our social well-being are:

  • Joining a club or a group that shares our interests or hobbies
  • Volunteering for a cause that we care about
  • Reaching out to old friends or making new ones
  • Spending quality time with our family and loved ones

2 Physical well-being: 

Have you ever been tired that even sleep can’t fix it? That often occurs as a sign of weakened physical strength. A good fix is usually physical exercise.

When we exercise for example, our brain releases the good hormone called endorphins. They are critical to reducing stress. It is no gain saying that our ability to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle through healthy physical activities can improve our strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance. It can also prevent or manage chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis. Some ways to enhance our physical well-being are.

  • Following a balanced and nutritious diet
  • Getting enough sleep and rest
  • Exercising regularly and choosing activities that we enjoy. 
  • Consulting our doctor before starting or changing any fitness routine

3 Intellectual well-being: 

You die when you stop learning is not a farce, it is real and very literal. Research has shown that Intellectual stimulation (learning) can enhance our memory, concentration, creativity, and problem-solving skills. It can also prevent or delay cognitive decline, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

A British research study showed that being bored (which occurs when you don’t learn new things very often) increases your chances of having heart diseases two times more than people who keep their mind occupied. In their research, people who reported being bored over a long period of time had heart disease rates more than twice as high as those who did not report boredom.

  • Reading books, magazines, newspapers, or blogs
  • Taking a course or learning a new skill
  • Playing games, puzzles, or brain teasers
  • Exploring new places or cultures

4 Creative well-being: 

What have you created? Being creative is a sign of a very healthy mind, how we express ourselves and tap into our inner potential can foster joy, curiosity, and innovation. It can also help us cope with stress, boredom, or frustration. Some ways to enhance our creative well-being are:

  • Engaging in artistic activities, such as painting, drawing, writing, or music
  • Trying new things or experimenting with different materials or techniques
  • Sharing our work or ideas with others or joining a creative community
  • Appreciating the beauty and inspiration around us

5 Emotional well-being: 

How do you feel?  Are you in touch with your feelings and emotions? Being able to say what you feel per time and control your emotions is an indicator of emotional strength.

Emotional health affects our mood, self-esteem, motivation, and resilience. It can also help us deal with life’s challenges and changes. Here are some ways to enhance our emotional well-being are:

  • Practicing gratitude and optimism
  • Seeking support from others when we need it
  • Expressing our emotions in healthy ways
  • Seeking professional help if we experience depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues

6 Spiritual well-being:

Do you have a belief system? Sometimes a belief in an entity helps us navigate difficult situations. Spirituality can be different for everyone. It can be related to religion, faith, values, beliefs, or philosophy. Spiritual wellness can help us cope with stress, grief, or loss. It can also give us hope, peace, and joy. Some ways to enhance our spiritual well-being are:

  • Praying or meditating
  • Attending a religious service or joining a faith community
  • Exploring our values and beliefs
  • Engaging in activities that make us feel connected to something bigger than ourselves

7 Financial well-being: 

Money matters are a key part of well-being, getting our finances together often gives us a sense of security in our plan for now and the future. Financial security affects our lifestyle, health, and happiness. It can also help us achieve our goals and dreams.
Some ways to enhance our financial well-being are:

  • Creating a budget and tracking our expenses
  • Saving and investing wisely
  • Seeking advice from a financial planner or counselor
  • Reducing debt and avoiding unnecessary spending

By focusing on these seven dimensions of wellness, we can make the most of our retirement years and enjoy them to the fullest.
